I got into this work before I even knew it had a name. When friends and family were pregnant, I naturally showed up encouraging, supporting, and holding space. Though doula work is much deeper, at its root it is ancestral care. It is love passed down through hands and presence. I was failed by the medical system twice, and I could not sit by while my community kept being harmed. I do not doula out of revenge, but out of necessity and responsibility. The same way I nurture my two womb gifts, I nurture mamas and support families. This is sacred work, and I show up with intention every single time.
